Instructor / Future Instructor Training with Adventure 21

March is a great time of the year to get some refresher training done and there is nothing better than getting wet in the gorges around the Lake District.

The first thing we have planned is a White Water Safety and Rescue course which enables instructors working for Adventure 21 to run sessions in site specific gorges.

The WWSR course is a fantastic course that involves throwing yourself and others into fast moving water and being rescued! its both fun and informative. A must for anyone involved in taking groups near moving water or even just to get valuable experience around water. (its not just for instructors!)

The course covers lots of area's including gorges, river rescue, raft rescue plus canoe and kayak rescues.

Busy into January and February 2012

Busy busy busy, that's how we like it, lots of people coming back to us this year and lots of new customers.

I looked through the calendar for this time last year and we are way in front and bookings are now confirmed and deposits paid up through March to July which is great news for us and the bank of freelance instructors.

We have some old faces back this year, when i say old i don't really mean old, just that we haven't seen them for a while.

John Kennedy is back with us this year after time off looking after his young daughter. She's now at school, so John has found time to come back and join the Adventure 21 team. John's a great laugh and has been in the game for many years and has bags of experience so fits in well with the team.

School and youth group activity trips

Although schools funding has been reduced over the past few years, we have tried to be competitive with our prices where possible to enable groups to still enjoy adventure activity trips with us.

Team building Blackburn, Lancashire

Keeping activities local and in school is proving to benefit youth groups, keeping the costs of travel down. We have some great new venues in the Lancashire areas for activities and our new paint ball site in Blackburn is running well and being enjoyed by school and youth groups alike.

We are well into December and the festive season and we are all ready for a little time off from activities and are looking forward to some well earned time with the family!

Adventure 21 don't exactly shut down over the Festive period but we do take a few days off to open pressies and enjoy a few extra meals!

We have sessions right up to the 24th this year then family groups in the Lakes midweek between Christmas and new year, so if you fancy getting out you know where to come.

We saw some great archery even though it was a little blustery and i think the smiles on the girls faces say it all about the session.

The hen's mum was happy to hit the target as you can see, it does look as though she was a target but she wasnt!

After the archery it was out with the guns for a spot of air rifle shooting, these girls weren't half competitive and what a good shot they all were, targets were going down all over the range.

Hello to anyone who gets time to look on here, we hope the Autumn and the coming Winter are treating you well. The firewood is stacked in the wood store and the burners are are on but the cold weather hasn't stopped people wanting to get out and enjoy a few adventure activities and paintball. In fact its been the busiest November in the 11 years of Adventure 21.

We have had some great mountain days, some fantastic corporate activity events and the paint-balling is going from strength to strength.

We have a great team working at Adventure 21 and its always add to the list and this year we have Dan, Dan and Chris who are all recent instructors to join us.

Recently most of our work has taken place outside of the Lancashire at our base in Coniston. After numerous meetings over the past few weeks we have been busy planning new ventures in the Lancashire and Manchester areas. We are now happy with the extended paint balling venues and should be able to add another site in Colne, we are also working with Chorley Borough Council looking at some adventure training races for beginners, intermediates and corporate team building groups, this will include, sit on top kayaks, a zip wire, assault course etc - watch this space. We have also moved back into local schools in the area offering a range of mobile adventure activities at winter prices, please call us if any of these new ventures are of interest to you.

This month we had a visit from Widnes Vikings Rugby League team, Widnes have just moved up into the super league and decided to use Adventure 21 for one of their pre season training sessions. The brief was "make it tough" so we did. Starting at Coniston Boating center we sent the team on a warm up run and sprint up the road to the fell gate at the start of the Walner Scar road, Coniston side. Anyone that has been up the road in a car will know how steep it is, try running it! After a brief stop to get their breath back the team's chose a log to carry, with instructions not to put it down!

The log carry was supposed to be for 2 miles but unfortunately some of the teams put it down which meant that the brief changed and the log was to be carried to the top of the Old Man of Coniston, a height of 803 metres / 2635 feet

It was a good effort by all the team and it must have been the first time that trees had been seen at the top of the Coniston fells in a few hundred years.

Vikings coach Denis Bett's and assistant coach Mick Cassidy said it was a great way to see how the team performed together in a different environment and that the team would gain a lot from it.

We wish the team well for the new season and we will be watching their progress and taking up the offer of going to watch them play.

As per usual things have been busy and hectic at Adventure 21. We are now well into the corporate season with groups and companies from all over the North west and further afield taking part in the wide range of activities that we provide.

The weather has been kind to us all and we have seen some unusually high temperatures for this time of year although we have also had our fair share of rain.

On the Lake its a little quieter with the schools back which gives us lots of room to spread out and work with some of the bigger groups we work with.

We are still doing lots of team activities in and around the Lancashire area, Rivington is a great area when it comes to team building activities and we have had plenty of local businesses taking part in team building days.

This month has seen us expand our paint balling, we can now take groups of 30 and this looks to increase again in the new year. The paintball has proved to be a very popular activity this year and we already have bookings for the rest of 2011 and well into 2012.

Well what can i say, that must have been the quickest month ever! its been busy, busy, busy in the Adventure 21 camp and if you haven't been on our facebook group for a while, check out what our customers have been up to. We have literally hundreds of pictures of people having fun both on wet activities and on dry session as well.

Our paintball site in the Lakes continues to grow in popularity and we are getting groups in most weekends now so it was definitely worth starting it up and giving our customers something new to try. Stag parties are using the paintballing the most so we are trying to get the Hens involved as well.

Adventure 21 have been at Brockhole again over the summer working for the Lake District National Park Authority during there summer activities program. This is the 3rd year running and again the customers came to try out activities like bush craft, raft building and archery. Brockhole is the LDNPA visitor centre, if you get chance get yourself down there and have a look around. Stunning views of Windermere and inside the house there is a cafe, shop and some great displays and attractions.

By the feel of the weather its starting to get colder so ass we move into the Autumn and winter months we continue providing activities although full submersion activities do get too cold so canyoning is out and other water activities such as gorge scrambling, raft building, canoeing and kayaking do require wetsuits and plenty of warm clothes as well as the full waterproof clothing we provide.

Archery, rifle shooting and paintball are all activities that you can enjoy through Autumn and Winter so if you fancy something different, remember we are still open for business.

Just a quick update as we move in to August. Summer is going really well with a mix of weather instead of long days of rain we seem to be getting a few days of sun and a few days of rain which works well for us and the plants lol.

We have had lots of people ringing us and e-mailing for activities and with Lisa in the office picking the e-mails up every day we are seeing a lot of happy people taking advantage of the summer holidays.

As usual we are seeing some old friends from past years coming back to us again this year and bringing others along to enjoy the fun. Its always good to see people and to catch up with what they have been up to.

Well Ive managed to get to our blog before the end of the month this time. Again its been busy busy busy so nothing new there really. We have taken on some new staff again in the past few months and some instructors have been on induction training to increase their earning potential. Aaron is running a lot of the paintballing sessions and with his military background and funny personality he's making the sessions a really enjoyable fun experience.

Aaron is also training up in the gorge, after assisting in gorge and canyoning sessions over the past 12 months he decided he wanted to look at leading groups. Last Saturday saw him taking his first lead instructor role, assisted and overlooked by myself. To be honest i wasn't really needed and when he gains his SPA (Single Pitch Award) in climbing and a white water safety and rescue course he will be able to lead groups in both Church Beck in Coniston and the Esk over in Eskdale. Well done to Aaron for his efforts so far.

His fun outlook on life puts people at ease and his background in group safety ensures you will be looked after on sessions with him. He has been running archery and rifle shooting sessions for us for quite a while now and so it wasn't going to be long before he got the pull towards more extreme, wet activities.

Paint balling at our Torver site continues to grow and develop, new games and new ideas in the game zones are happening weekly. This weeks addition is to "cheese Burger Hill", we have added 6 trip wire land mines to the area in front of the hill top battle defences. If any get triggered all the team have to get the "man down" out of the battle area safe and then return to take the Flag.

As we have mentioned before, we see ourselves as offering a more personal service to our customers. Everyone who have been with us so far have said how relaxed the sessions are whilst keeping it safe. You come to us for a fun time, not to be told off, that aside if i catch anyone with their mask up or off i will beat you with a whippy stick lol

Well its happened again....where did May go? i had my birthday in May and a family holiday in Wales which was wet, windy and mainly cold, but we still managed to get into the sea. Work on the other hand has been manic! luckily we have Lisa in the office to answer customers e-mails every day when i'm out working.

Hen parties seem to be on the increase, it looks like the ladies are choosing to do something a little more challenging this year although i do fancy a bit of pampering myself! maybe times are changing???

Our paintball site continues to get better and the feedback is great, its proving to be a great extra activity that Adventure 21 can offer. We now have 6 game zones set up in a woodland setting and probably the only railway cutting for ambush scenarios in the country. Its well worth a look and if anyone want to hire it for tournaments we are happy to discuss it, so get in touch.

April into May 2011

Sorry for the delay in updating the blog, March was busy but April just seemed to flash by and here we are in May already.

We have had a lot of new customers in April coming to try out some of our activities,

and a lot of repeat customers some of which are on there 7 and 8th visits,

Chris Lester and family members, Adventure 21 friends for over 7 years now.

Our paint balling continues to grow and the new venue is proving really popular, we have started getting repeat visits already and with the summer foliage the cover is fantastic extending our game zones. We still have a lot to do there but everyone who has been says its a great experience and a very well run site, which is really good for us. Its a great activity for groups of friends, corporate days, family groups or stag and hen parties.

Well i do like to keep things up to date, but with March 2011 being our busiest to date, our blog had to take a back seat unfortunately. We have been doing lots of school's activity work including a great wilderness bushcraft canoe camp for a school in Warrington,

The popularity of our new South Lake District Paintball site Near Torver is growing week to week. This weekend saw another stag party joining in the fun with a morning of paint ball followed by an afternoon of Gorge scrambling and canyoning.

Although the group were a little hungover or as one put it "I've got food poisoning!" they pulled out all the stops to give the stag a great day and a lot of bruises to remember it by.

Things got a little rough with the group doing the traditional stag hunt! oh and best man hunt (we wouldn't leave him alone now would we!) the two lads took it in there stride even after taking around 1000 rounds at pretty close range.

New Paintball Venue in Torver near Coniston

Well it's been a long time coming but we finally have a new home for our paintball in the Lake District. The new venue has everything needed to make for a great session of paint ball in the Lake District. Whether you are staying in Windermere, Kendal, Keswick, Ambleside or Bowness, our new site is in easy reach.

Game Zones include my particular favorite "Ambush Alley" its an old railway cutting with steep sides, plenty of cover for the teams above but not a lot for the teams below.

With prices for a three/four hour session at £18 including vat with 100 free balls and extra balls at £5 per 100 after that, we look to be the cheapest paintball organiser in the Lake District.

If its fun you want with a relaxed but SAFE atmosphere then we are the paintball people for you.

First Bushcraft camp of 2011

Although we had work right through this winter, the season doesn't feel as though its truly started until you have slept out under the stars on a bush craft camp. Last weekend saw the first camp of the year and although it started off a little stressful with the Navara blowing its turbo on the motorway up there at 7.00 in the morning and us arriving three hours late to meet the clients, we pulled it back though with the help of Phil from Coniston Boating Centre Adventure21 - Coniston Boating Centre coniston The Lake District
who explained our problems and gave the lads a brew.

After a brief session on what to take on the trip, we packed our barrels and boats to make up the time with a swift paddle down Coniston Water. On arrival at our bushcraft camp venue the lads got stuck into building the shelters that they were to spend the night in. With the weather being fine but cloudy it was idea conditions and it gave the team plenty of time to create what can only be described as fantastic first attempts.

Each structure slowly took shape and the group worked with the environment, only taking small amounts of moss from a wide area of woodland so as to minimise the environmental impact and allowing the moss to be able to grow back easily.

With the shelters built the lad's had a short break and a well earned brew before the wood collection for the evenings fire.

Dinner was cooked by the whole team (except for me) and enjoyed by all four of us. We had a large selection of meats and vegetables from which the lad's made a great beef stew and could have fed about twenty people never mind four!

After a bottle or two of red wine the team retired to there shelters for the night and woke to a light dusting of snow to start the day.

During the early hours of Saturday morning we had gusts of 80 mph winds that thrashed the camp, blowing out the parachute shelter and totally extinguishing the fire with driving rain.

The lad's stayed warm and dry in the self built shelters and after packing up the camp we packed the canoes and set off back to Coniston.

We all enjoyed a full English breakfast at the Meadowdore Cafe Lake District, Coniston, Meadowdore Cafe
before starting the days session of knot tying, fire lighting and knife, axe and saw work.

You don't get bigger smiles than that now do you.

The full English is usually cooked over the fire in camp, but due to the weather and how hard the lad's had worked we treated the group which i think was greatly appreciated. After breakfast we started on a few bushcraft skills starting with some knot tying and tarp erection.

The lad's also got to grips with peg making (You can decide for yourselves who made the best peg! but they all worked great and are very handy for drying socks and other clothing when camping.)

and made great first attempts at pot holders for over a fire.

Although it was really wet and we couldn't complete all the fire lighting section of the program the lad's did mange to create fire by using the flint and steel on birch bark. Don't forget to practice boy's!

and a laugh about the events of the two day's. Thanks for a great camp fellas and for your patience, all i need to do now is unpack and dry the kit. I hope to see you all again in the near future.

Nearly new van for the new 2011 season,

The old van (Renault short wheel base) has served us well over the past 12 months and on occasions has been home, mobile office and mobile store room.

With 2011 looking to be even busier than 2010 we decided to look into a bigger van which would do the same job as the old one but on a grander scale.

Being a high top, long wheel base van, our new Eveco will be fitted out with a rear store, toilet and shower and living accommodation for 4 and space to use as an office / staff meeting area. (More importantly brew area for morning instructor chats!)

The first job is to get the windows in and to fit the insulation, wiring and heater system's. We want it to be winterised so it can be used for all year round sessions and canoe trips to Scotland and abroad.

Plans are on the cards for some sea kayaking sessions in Wales this year so our new home from home will prove invaluable in the planning of new trips.

After a walk around the grounds of The West Tower Hotel www.thewesttower.com with its stunning countryside views we went indoors to view the newly refurbished accommodation and function rooms.

Adventure 21 will be able to offer a wide range of activities at West Tower including Paintballing, Archery, air rifle shooting, a zip wire and a range of corporate team events and challenges.

Activities will also be available for wedding's and birthday celebrations.

A fun session of basic bush craft skills, learn some knots, learn how to light a fire without matches and build yourself a shelter, in the afternoon cool down with some gorge scrambling, swimming through pools and climbing waterfalls. It all makes for a great day out.

All equipment supplied for this really wet morning, wetsuits, waterproofs and helmets plus great instruction from one of our experienced and fun instructors.

FEBRUARY HALF TERM HOLIDAY FAMILY ACTIVITY DAY Archery, Hill scramble and gorge scramble - THURSADAY 24th February 2011

Activity rating – Easy, Moderate, Difficult, Extreme

Starting with a fun session of archery, act like robin hood for the session then join us climbing and scrambling around the Coniston crag's. In the afternoon cool down with some gorge scrambling, swimming through pools and climbing waterfalls. It all makes for a great day out.

All equipment supplied for this really wet morning, wetsuits, waterproofs and helmets plus great instruction from one of our experienced and fun instructors.

A full on wet day of fun, learn the art of open canoeing, build yourselves a raft out of barrels and wooden spars and finish of gorge scrambling, swimming through pools and climbing waterfalls.

Adventure 21 on CBBC "Gimme a break"

Last year Adventure 21 were asked to help with filming with the BBC for "Gimme a break" it's a program on the CBBC channel, it's definitely worth watching, loads of fun.

The program follows families after the kids have picked the next family holiday and the parents don't know what they are up for or what clothes the kid's have packed. It's great fun and we enjoyed working with both the family and the crew.

Look out for it on Thursday 15th February 2011 on the CBBC channel at 5.45pm.

Mine Adventures

Well we all need a day off from the stress and strain of work. Yesterday Dave from www.adventure21.co.uk and Phil from Lake District National Park - Coniston Boating Centre decided to do something a little different on their day's off. We thought that really over the past few years that we had become a little lazy and that we needed to start doing the things we always used to do. So on one of the Lake Districts better days for weather, (like a couple of fool's) we headed under ground into the heart of the Coniston Fell's.

Being our first day off doing things in an age we forgot the most important bit of kit, Helmets, but as we were there anyway we went in. Yes i know, a little silly and i wouldn't advise anyone else to do it...sorry. Anyway we had everything else, first aid and safety kit, extra lights and we had told people where we were exactly and what time we would be out.

The mines are a dangerous place and SHOULD NOT be entered without knowing where you are going, knowing the dangers and having the correct equipment. False floors and drops of over three hundred feet are only a small part of the dangers of mine exploration. If you want to go, get professional advise and take a guided tour. Having gained experience in the mines around Coniston over the past 19 years, there are still only a handful i will go in and even then i take real care when doing so. Dangers aside, it's a real insight into how people used to work, risking there lives on a daily basis in the search for good slate and copper.

Anyway, we had a great day and got back safe. Next time we will remember our helmets as well as all the other safety kit.

Stag Party Archery and Rifle shooting in Anglezarke, Lancashire

Saturday was a chilly one, but the lads from Dave's stag party turned up to try their hand at archery and rifle shooting with us. Starting with a few practice arrows the team soon got to grips with the Archery.

After a friendly competition and a few laughs at some of the better off target shots (below!) we moved on to some rifle shooting.

The temperature increased a little as we moved on to the rifle shooting (not by a lot!) and the team showed that they had their eye in by getting some great scores. Overall the session went well with everyone saying they enjoyed the experience but the cold did make it hard to take aim at times.

Lancashire Paintball day - with the Chorley lad's yesterday

Although it rained right through the session, the Chorley lad's showed their true spirit and carried on regardless. The games went out the window with the teams just wanting to paint each other from head to toe. The fact that you are running around for most of the session keeps you warm so they definitely didn't feel the cold and with the adrenalin flowing the rain didn't dampen their spirits. Looking forward to seeing you all again lad's in the spring.

Sharing an open canoe and paddling on Coniston Water is a fantastic way to celebrate valentines weekend if your away with the one you love. We will take you to some of the more quiet, secluded spots on the lake where you can relax with a glass of wine and enjoy a romantic meal with a difference, prepared by the side of the lake.

Family time

At this time of year, time is spread between doing e-mails, updating the website, risk assessments and basically getting ready for the start of the busy season. So its nice to be able to get out at weekends with the boy's and do something they want to do. On Sunday Samson was at a friends birthday party which gave Lewis and myself time to get out and have some shooting practice. Sam had bought himself a new .22 air rifle before Christmas out of his wages and he lent it to Lewis for the afternoon.

Although it was a cold day we had a great time and Lewis's shot is getting better. It won't be long until he will be instructing on his own i think (under the watchful eye of a qualified instructor of course!). At present Adventure 21 have 4 Gamo .22 air rifles and will be looking to bring this up to six later in 2011 to mirror our archery numbers. The purchase of the Enola Gaye MK5 thunder flash and 3rd Generation ring pull smoke grenades has proved popular with customers. They both enhance the paint ball games and make for truly realistic battle scenario games.

Although our paintball games have a military element and is super safe, we do keep it fun all the way, if you want the serious side you can have it but we feel that as with our other activities it has to be a real laugh. If you fancy trying it please give us a call.

Series 2A about to be reborn for our Paint ball games

Its sat in the unit for the past 3 years but is about to come out of hibernation. Our old 1962 Landrover series 2A, once used by the RAF is about to start work again as client transport into the game zones during our Paintball sessions in Rivngton in Lancashire and Coniston in the Lake District. Battered and bruised it might be but with only 34'000 genuine miles on it the engines sounds amazing. Having not been used since 1987 and being stored inside for that time its in sound mechanical condition. It has a complete rag top so will be great fun for the summer months. Keep an eye open for it in the coming months.

Those of you who have been with us before will remember getting changed by the side of the lake at Coniston and our equipment hanging in the tree's before the start of a session! well thats a thing of the past now. We have a large box trailer which we use as a store room and changing area right on the shores of Coniston Water. It has benches and has enough room to get 10 people in at once. It makes all the difference on the many wet days we get in the Lake District.

Adventure 21 in 2011

Happy new year and welcome to our new blog.

Well 2010 was a busy year at Adventure 21, we took on new staff in the office to deal with bookings and finance and welcomed some great characters to our already large freelance instructor pool. This looks to increase again in 2011 with the bookings already rolling in for January through to April and on into the Summer!

At the end of 2010 we started up our Adventure 21 paint balling sessions which proved to be a fantastic addition to the already wide range of activities. The bookings for the paint ball are already exceeding our expectations and with it being mobile, clients are taking advantage of the opportunity for us to bring paint balling to them. We have two main venues for the paint ball, Coniston in the Lake District and Anglezarke, near Rivington in Lancashire. Check out our paint ball page for details PAINT BALL

During 2010 we had so many customers asking for regular activities that we have started a new Adventure Activities Club. Its great for those of you who want to be able to get out with like minded people, its open to anyone, couples, individuals or groups, if your interested please have a look Activities Club

At home the training goes on and this year my two son's Samson and Lewis will be out working with Adventure 21 again this year. They have taken a particular liking to the paint ball (mmmm wonder why???) and they love being marshals and i dare anyone to put a foot wrong, their aim is deadly. They can be mainly seen either on the archery and rifle shooting range or on / in the water whether it be in the gorge or on the lake.

After adding Christmas Voucher's 4 years ago as a way to book activities with Adventure 21, we have seen sales soar in this area, with this year seeing the highest sales of vouchers to date. Which in turn means there will be loads of activities available for people to join in with on our future events and course's section of our website Future Events take a look and see if there is anything that takes your fancy.
